Dirt Roads to Paved City Streets
11/17/17-Heber City, UT
From the dusty dirt road side streets of Annabella, UT to the bustling main street of Heber City Utah I found myself sitting in the basement offices of Epic Engineering, a multi-disciplinary engineering firm focusing in civil, and architectural engineering. After going over the employee handbook with the HR Representative I couldn’t believe that only two short months ago I had sent out a resume to this company, nailed the interview and now, May 1st, it was my first day on the job as an architectural Intern to the company’s architect; Todd Drennan.
Growing up in the small farm community of Annabella it seemed clear what my career path should be. Diesel mechanic like my dad, or farmer/rancher. But I had always had larger dreams than that. I had always loved the world of architecture and wanted to design buildings around the nation, even the world. After receiving my job offer letter these dreamed started to become a little more apparent. Heber City, even though still having that small town feel was the gateway to Park City. One of the most growing , bustling cities in the state. I knew that with this internship would be worth much more than I knew.
After working with Epic for a short four months I this was apparent as ever. I assisted with the remodel and completion of many multi-million dollar homes located in the Wasatch Valley, and gained so much valuable experience that I Believe will stay with me and remind me that everyone has to start somewhere.
The EDGE Center on Southern Utah University’s campus had a big hand in my learning process with my time at Epic. The EDGE program is an organization on campus that helps students create and complete a special project of their own that is designed to help achieve a unique personal or professional goal. The projects are designed to take longer than a single semester giving the students a chance to complete a long term comprehensive project which many employers are looking for in resumes and portfolios.
